JANUARY 16, 2018

On January 16th, at 7:17 pm MST, we will have the first New Moon of 2018 at 26 degrees and 54 minutes of Capricorn.

Even though we can’t see her, we can sense her presence and feel her message that this is a time to get in touch with something within us that seeks expression.  As this New Moon in Capricorn coincides with the cycle of a New Year, we have the opportunity to hit the reset button and get in touch with our personal aspirations. This New Moon, with the Sun and 4 planets in Capricorn compels us to embrace what we know in our hearts we need to do, and then to fine tune our intentions for growth and improvements as we move into 2018.

Capricorn is an earth sign, practical, serious and committed to self-discipline and accomplishment.  Capricorn, ruled by Saturn seeks integrity through the development of inner authority.  There is a strong orientation to career, but more broadly the accomplishment of something meaningful; the idea of “great work”. This can look like many things to many people, but whatever it might be, it is something that will require something of a person.  With a plan, determination, discipline and patience, some form of mastery within the physical world can be accomplished.  Just as the mountain goat, a symbol for Capricorn reaches the highest peak one step at a time, so can we.

This Capricorn New Moon is ruled by Saturn and on December 19, 2017 transiting Saturn moved into its own sign of Capricorn where it will be until 2020. This transit strengthens Saturn’s natural energy of discipline, commitment and maturity.  The lessons Saturn brings to us help us to grow up. To commit to something of personal value and do the work necessary to grow within the reality of our given situation.

Mercury in Capricorn is in a conjunction with Saturn which brings thought and discipline together to help strategize and plan, but could create a mental outlook that can feel stuck or challenging. If this should occur, please remember that Mercury and Saturn in Capricorn also can provide a serious mindset with disciplined intention to get clear and help define your path moving forward. Take some time and talk with a trusted friend or loved one about your feelings to eliminate feeling alone and to gain a different perspective. Also be aware that this conjunction could create a focus solely on the practical and what looks like an impressive goal, yet lacks personal connection.  Thankfully, Venus is in the mix and in the last degrees of Capricorn reminds us all of the value in bringing love into this process of self-actualization. Her message is that when we understand what we love and makes us happy, we’ve found an essential truth in manifestation. With love we can put our heart and soul into our personal growth, our relationships, and mission in life.

And then there is Pluto in Capricorn, 8 degrees away from the Moon and yet still exerting his powerful presence of transformation. As Pluto has been slowly moving through Capricorn, each of us is gaining a deeper understanding of the preciousness of life and what truly matters to each of us. That which gives our lives true meaning. And wherever Pluto is transiting through our individual birthcharts is where old issues, wounds, and memories are being stirred up and revealed for the purpose of self-awareness and healing. These deep feelings are interconnected with our ability to understand, cultivate and bring into fruition our own personal greatness. Pluto in Capricorn emphases the importance of integrity as we seek to find and fulfil our personal passion and purpose in the many facets of our lives. And very importantly what can result when we don’t live with honor and principles, instead falling prey to the misuse of our personal power.

Adding astrological influence is transiting Uranus in Aries now moving forward after a long retrograde, making a square to this New Moon. This aspect is bringing us another layer of somewhat chaotic and unexpected shifts and upheavals that challenge us to let go, find courage and claim greater authenticity amidst the fears that hold us back. The aspect of a square is compelling, but can move us to further clarify and develop our lives in the ways that fulfil us. In that we become more proficient in the creation of our lives.

Also, transiting Mars and Jupiter, both in the water sign of Scorpio, add support and stimulation through a sextile. Mars sextiles the Moon adding passionate drive and focus to our awareness and sending a message that action is needed to move forward with our intentions. Jupiter makes a very tight sextile to Pluto providing ample opportunity for inspired growth as we do the ongoing work of personal transformation. The key with this Mars/Jupiter sextile is that we need to go deep and be honest with ourselves about what we truly desire to accomplish so that our time, our commitment, and our emotional stamina run the right race.

This New Moon in Capricorn calls us to dive into our depths and emotionally connect to what matters to us. To set the tone for meaningful accomplishment.  To find our strength, resilience and purpose that will enrich our lives as well as the world. If everything is connected through energy, we are part of this. If we think that our intentions and actions affect only ourselves, the fact is they radiate into our community and out into the world. We have the ability whether we intend to or no, to affect others and the unfoldment of life.

What and who truly matters to you right now? What gift within, would you like to bring out into the world? What has been your dream? What would you like to set in motion? Where do you see yourself in 6 months, 1 year, 5 years?  What seeds can you plant now that will set you on that path? What path would foster your inner authority and maturity? What path would enhance your relationships? What path and expression of “you” would add a layer of meaning to your life as well as those around you?

Capricorn has a natural drive to turn inspired ideas into form and function. Sometimes though it can feel like quite a heavy load. However, Capricorn’s message is…there is a way, through commitment, self-discipline, patience and wisdom. It will challenge and tire you at times; yet the reward is great. Especially if it truly matters to you.

Understand your heart and your desires for accomplishment. Create that practical plan and work at it. Discipline yourself to your goals and become the best you can. Open your heart and embrace your greatness!
